Hawley retainers combine an acrylic palatal or lingual plate with custom-bent metal wire components. The lab design can be adjusted around the prescribed arch form, tooth positions and the desired retentive features; this makes the appliance structurally different from a fully clear thermoformed retainer.
Because wires and acrylic occupy different areas of the mouth, fit, speech considerations, clasp placement and comfort need to be reviewed with the clinician. Wire design, acrylic colour and any special features should be documented before a fabrication partner is selected.
